I have been having trouble with the weather station my kids gave me for my birthday. At first I thought it was just that the rain gauge was not recording the rain that fell all day on the 5th. then I saw that not only was it not recording the rain data, but the web page was not updating. I did go check out the rain gauge and there was an absolutely enormous spider inside with a large egg sack and busily spinning a web. Once I cleaned that out, the rain gauge started working again, but the server was still not working.
I was at at loss, I tried stopping and re-starting the server on my laptop and that did not work.

Even trying the insanity method did no good. You know insanity is trying the same thing over and over hoping for different results . Finally in desperation I read the manual for Wview and came upon a command line utility for deleting all data from the server. I thought “Oh well if this doesn’t work I will have to remove the software and start over anyway” so I purged all data and tried to restart the server…
mike@ubuntu:~$ sudo wviewcleardata ################################################################################ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! READ THIS BEFORE PROCEEDING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! --> wview database purging utility --> Note: This script will REMOVE all archive records and DELETE the following databases: wview-hilow.sdb (HILOW data) wview-history.sdb (daily history) wview-noaa.sdb (NOAA data) --> Use this script to reset all data - i.e., remove simulator data to begin using your real station data. --> It is highly recommended that you BACKUP YOUR ARCHIVE DIRECTORY before doing this unless YOU ARE SURE you want to purge all weather data - it will not be recoverable after this action! IF THAT IS NOT WHAT YOU WANT, HIT CTRL-C NOW TO ABORT THIS SCRIPT! ################################################################################ Pausing 30 seconds - CTRL-C to ABORT.............................. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you sure you want to DESTROY all of your collected weather data? (NO/yes): yes Purging all weather data! Deleting all archive records: Deleting auto-generated databases: ################################################################################ --> ALL wview weather data purged! ################################################################################ mike@ubuntu:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/wview force-reload Shutting down wview daemons... Starting wview daemons: mike@ubuntu:~$
..............and HEY LOOK AT THAT!!!! it worked.
I don’t know why purging all data made it possible to restart the server, but I am glad it did work. And now I may want to move the server to another computer anyway. But that is another story. To sum up, the weather server is now working again and hopefully it will be updating to this website again soon. Wooohoo!
In other doings the newer goat shelter is starting to look like a shelter. I have been scrounging materials for the shelter from the old grainery that was pulled down before I could stop the action. This building LOOKED like it could fall down any minute, but it took my son and his cousins most of a day to pull the center supports out and make it collapse. Over the past 6 or so years it has just been a pile of lumber to be cleaned up and last year when Jon came to live here he started to do just that. Of course when the weather is rotten he would go work in the shop cleaning and sorting junk.
Well, I finally got the old roof structure dismantled and those materials are what I am using for the goat shelter. This shelter will not be large or fancy, in fact I have plans for a building that will house a milking parlor and feed storage as well as animals. This shelter I am building now hangs off the back side of the old chicken coop and only needs to get a few animals through the winter.
I am worried that it is taking too long to get all of this building and fencing done. If there is another buyer for the buckling I have been looking at, I told the owner not to pass up the sale. Yesterday I got an email from her telling me that building and fencing takes time and she would try to have the buckling’s hooves trimmed and have him caught up on his shots before I came to pick him up.
I need to get back to work now.
