End of the month and the impending invasion of family

So, as the 4th of July approaches, so does the annual family gathering. This years cast may be slightly different, but it will be the same insanity with people stopping by and staying for varying duration.I do look forward to the family gathering. Actually it is always more than family and we enjoy the time together and the food and the fireworks when they go off on time. Still, I am always somewhat relieved when everyone has gone back home and we can recover and get back to the schedule I am used to. I do enjoy the solitude out here on the farm.

This week I finally got the irrigation water to  run well enough that it covered the entire yard. I wasn’t watching carefully enough though and flooded the basement for the first time in almost 2 years. There has to be a better way to ensure that the yard gets the water it needs and the basement doesn’t get any water. I have to think that one  over.

It is this coming week that will be jam packed though. I got a call last night that the dozen eggs I gave out on May 15th hatched out 10 ducklings. By my calculations they would have hatched out on or about the 12th of June and so they would be just over 2 weeks old. Bob will bring them out on his way to church tomorrow and Stacey said they would let them mature for a while in their garage.

I have been having a heck of a time getting the ducks to climb back up the ramp into their more secure housing. I will have to build a new place with ground level entry to save me having to chase and catch 15, and eventually 25 ducks every night.

Also tomorrow will be the first day that Jon and Adam will both be here and available to help with fencing the long pasture. I think tomorrow we will be clearing corners and straightening posts. Then on Monday Adam takes Tangristner to  be butchered. That should give JuneCarter some relief on making milk since she will only be feeding 2 from Monday on.

Tuesday I will start feeding the Jensen critters so that they can go camping. Wednesday will be a somewhat normal day then on Thursday several family will arrive and everything goes crazy! I still need to do the regular mowing, watering, feeding etc…. Should be fun!

So now for the weekly and end of month egg report:

Week of 6/22/2014 through 6/28/2014:

  • Collected – 67
  • Sold – 2 dozen
  • Cartons filled – 5

Month of June (6/1 through 6/28):

  • Collected – 259
  • Sold – 10 dozen
  • Cartons filled – 20

And that’s it for this week.
